Upcoming Biblically-Based Parent Retreat in Gastonia, NC
Over the years, a good number of folks have asked me if I would ever consider doing a “Parent Retreat” that would be longer than the 2-day format I usually employ (See the notice on the home page for Upcoming Parent Retreat in Charlotte, NC) involve fewer people, and be completely based on Biblical principles. Yes, I would consider it. In fact, I am pleased to announce the first of hopefully many 3-day retreats, to be held on May 9, 10, and 11, in my hometown in Gastonia, NC. The retreat will be held in my office in Gastonia, NC. Our classroom will comfortably seat 12 people at tables, so enrollment in this special event is limited to—you guessed it—12 people. You can be a couple or a single parent. It doesn’t matter, but if you’re married, then allow me to point out the obvious: the value of the retreat will be maximized if both of you attend. Important things tend to get lost in translation.
Day One (May 9) will be spent laying out basic effective parenting principles and linking them to relevant Scripture. On Day Two (May 10), I’ll explain in greater detail how these principles relate to effective parenting practice and begin focusing on the how-to of implementation as well as the individual issues that participants bring to the table. Day Three will be devoted to problem-solving with the goal in mind of sending everyone home with not only the right point of view but also a plan for getting themselves, their children, and their families on the right track! And staying there!
Thursday’s and Friday’s sessions begin at 9:00 am and wrap at 4:30 pm. On Saturday, we will dismiss at 3:00 pm. On either Thursday or Friday evening, John and Willie will host dinner at Lotus restaurant, which is as good as most 4-star eateries in New York or San Francisco. There is no additional charge for that dinner. The cost of the entire seminar/retreat, including a packet of supplementary materials is as follows:
- Couple: $950
- Married Parent Attending Without Spouse: $750
- Single Unmarried Parent: $575
Parents can register using the link below or obtain further information by calling Willie Rosemond at 704.860.4711.
One Parent’s Testimony
I had read Parenting by the Book and implemented it with a small degree of success. Although I firmly believe in Biblically-based parenting principles, I had trouble sticking to them. When I learned that John would be speaking in my city (Honolulu), I signed up for both his evening presentation and the follow-up workshop (January 2013).
Revisiting the principles gave me the strength to try again. I implemented them the following day and enjoyed a stress-free evening. At first, I didn’t know what to do with time that had been previously allocated to tending to my children’s every desire (not need). It’s marvelous how quickly a child will do so much more independently when given the opportunity and motivation. I found that my children’s behavior is directly correlated to my attitude. When I lead, they follow. When I am wishy-washy, they lead (badly). When necessary, I utilize consequences, but as John teaches, consequences are not often needed when a parent has the right attitude.
Thank you, John, for doing God’s will and reminding parents that we are to do the same.
With much Aloha,
R.S. from Hawaii
